Covered Bridges Near New London – October 22, 2024
An enthusiastic group filled the meeting room to listen to award-winning author Kim Varney Chandler share her research and her fascination with the covered bridges of New Hampshire, and specifically those in the area around New London – Andover, Warner, Newport and Bradford.
Her passion for the subject has led her to partner with bridgewrights, timber framers, bridge engineers, historical societies, state and local offices, libraries, and others to compile extensive histories of each bridge.
In 2012 Kim Varney Chandler moved to Hancock, New Hampshire, a quintessential New Hampshire town, complete with a covered bridge. Exploring her new surroundings, she discovered other bridges, and then made a list of all those in the state and decided to photograph each one. During the pandemic she began gathering facts about the bridges, determined to learn how they were constructed, to gain a complete portrait of these historic structures. Her enthusiasm made for a lively presentation.
